As AI continues to evolve, its role in education, particularly grading, has sparked ongoing debate. While AI can grade large volumes of work quickly and objectively, it should be seen as a tool to assist educators, not replace them.  

Strengths of AI in Grading 

AI shines in areas with clear right-or wrong answers. It can automate grading for multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank tasks, freeing up teachers to focus on more meaningful student engagement. Tools like Grammarly and Turnitin’s Revision Assistant also offer real-time feedback on grammar and structure, helping students improve before submitting their work.  

AI is also valuable in analyzing student data. It can identify patterns in performance, uncover gaps in understanding, and support personalized learning through platforms like Disco, which adapts to individual progress.  

Limits and Concerns 

Despite these benefits, AI has important limitations. It struggles to interpret nuance, creativity, and originality, which are essential in subjects like literature or philosophy. AI may reward complex language over well-reasoned arguments and cannot fully evaluate the depth of thought.  

Bias is another concern. Some AI tools have been shown to favor standard English and penalize non-native speaker, reinforcing excising inequalities. In addition, a lack of transparency in how AI evaluates work can make it difficult for educators to explain grading decision to students. 

A Balanced Approach 

The solution lies in balance. AI should be used to handle repetitive grading tasks and surface learning trends, while teachers provide final evaluations and personalized feedback. Educators offer empathy, context, and insight that technology cannot replicate. When used thoughtfully, AI can enhance education by supporting, not replacing, the essential human role in teaching.
